DESIGN VERIFICATION

Index Engineering Ltd is a Type C Inspection Body.

This means that we have satisfied IANZ that the inspection body activities of Index Engineering are a clearly identifiable part of our business, and that we provide safeguards within the organisation to ensure adequate segregation of responsibilities and accountabilities between inspection and other activities. We have been approved to design AND design verify pressure piping and pressure vessels, with assurance of impartiality. For this kind of work, we satisfy the requirements of PECPR Regulations  Policy - Type B&C Design Verification [Regulation 25(1)(i)] and follow the required reporting path configuration, giving you confidence that an engineer does not design verify his or her own designs.

Four of our design verifiers have a signatory role.

ENGINEER REGISTRATION

MBIE has recently (24th March) announced that Cabinet will be progressing a new regulatory regime for professional engineers. Cabinet has agreed to proposals to develop a bill to introduce a new 2-tiered regulatory regime for engineers, and to establish a new regulator to oversee the regime. "The bill will require all engineers to be registered, and for those in higher-risk disciplines to be licensed in order to practice. While a large number of engineers are highly professional, there are too many that are practicing with no checks on their professionalism or competence and there are few means to hold them to account if their standards slip," says Amy Moorehead, Manager Building Policy, MBIE.

The bill is expected to be introduced later in 2022. We will be watching how this develops and what the implications are for our work. You can be assured of the professionalism of the Index Engineering team: we require our staff to be members of Engineering NZ (if eligible) and five of our engineers are Chartered Professional Engineers.
ENGINEER IN SAFETY

In 2017, WSP Opus was involved at a site where scaffolding collapsed (fortunately there were no serious injuries). It was not clear which party had specific responsibility for the scaffold design/supervision, but all parties had responsibility for the site to be safe to work at. WSP has subsequently produced a document providing guidance for the profession, to ensure that the learnings for this incident are shared.

KIWI LUMBER
We have done a considerable amount of work for Kiwi Lumber recently. Kiwi Lumber is a privately owned NZ company operating four modern sawmills in the North Island. It is FSC certified and has a focus on continuous improvement. Our work has included piping for a wood-fired boiler, detailed design work on a tank, as well as design verification of new and existing equipment.

API TANK INSPECTION
As an API Inspector, Tom has recently completed API 653 Aboveground Storage Tank inspections for a number of clients including an inspection of OjiFS No4 White Liquor tank. Regular tank inspections enable you to take action to ensure your tanks remain fit for purpose and meet the acceptance criteria of the relevant standards and codes.

HYDROGEN BLISTER REPAIR
Hydrogen blisters had formed on the external shell surface of a Recuperator, and our client engaged Index to investigate the effects of the blisters on the compliance of the vessel. Using information from a phased array and ultrasound thickness testing, we modelled the vessel in PV Elite and undertook fitness for service calculations in accordance with API57901/ASME FFS-1 2007. We could then provide advice to our client to help them make decisions on vessel repairs.
The client decided the best option was to cut out the centre strake of the vessel and replace it. We then assisted them with design verification of the repairs.

BMS SUMP REPLACEMENT
Jan and Pierre are working for OjiFS Kinleith Mill on this complicated job as part of the chemical plant upgrade. There is an existing concrete sump currently in use, and OjiFS is now intending to put in two separate seal pots. Index did the design and drawings of the new piping and seal pots and will be managing the construction phase during the June shut.
-- Staff News --
Thank goodness we are past this Omicron peak! How have you all survived?

Eighty percent of our staff have had to isolate at home due to Covid in their household, and over 40% of our personnel contracted Covid-19. Fortunately we have not had everyone isolating or sick at the same time and so there has been minimal impact on client outcomes.
Jan Snyman FEngNZ

Congratulations to Jan Snyman on becoming an Engineering Fellow!

From Engineering NZ website: "To become an Engineering New Zealand Fellow means to have made it to the top of the engineering profession and achieved outstanding results. Fellowship is an honoured class of membership, recognising the most highly experienced professionals who have made a huge impact on engineering in Aotearoa."   https://www.engineeringnz.org/news-insights/2022-fellows-announced/

Jan is an expert on pressure equipment, cranes and seismic design and has delivered many significant projects within the pulp and paper sector in both South Africa and NZ.  He has been a design verifier for 15 years and is one of only 3 people in New Zealand working as a design verifier for cranes and boilers within a NZ based inspection body.

Jan is committed to mentoring up and coming engineers, both within Index Engineering and on client sites. He has provided ongoing support to Engineering NZ over the last 15 years, through his work as an area practice assessor.

The Awards Dinner will be held at Parliament on 12 August.
Eham Kanesha
50 yr milestone

Congratulations to Eham on 50 years of Engineering!

Eham's career began in Sri Lanka and he has since worked in a variety of engineering roles across the globe, including in project management, engineering design, design verification, procurement and production. Eham has been a Senior Mechanical Engineer with Index Engineering for the last 9 years and is a highly valued team member.
Lynn Lope is our new CAD Draftsperson. Lynn brings 10+ years of practical experience as a welder and fabricator to the role and also has a CAD certificate from Toi Ohomai in Rotorua. She is currently assisting our clients with tank and pipe modelling.

We would like to do a shout-out to Miriam at Mourea Coffee Company!

Miriam has been delivering "Huntaway" coffee to us via cargo bike these last six months. Mourea Coffee Company's ethos is to source the beans as ethically and ecologically as possible, and this is a good fit with our values too.
